“It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place”

March 9th, 2009

Growing up, there was a grandfatherly fellow in our town that adopted all of us as kids as his own.  He would watch us, comment on how we’ve grown, ask us about our family, and often, share a bit of his wisdom.

He had a saying and a story for everything.  I mean everything.

If your hand itched he would say that meant money was coming your way. If you found a penny face up on the sidewalk, it was good luck.  If he saw a certain bird in the area, he told us that meant spring was on its way.

I always remember those sayings as I come across similar things in my life now and the events that promoted him to say it in the first place.

One time, there was a huge pothole in the street in the middle to town.  The road crew would come out and throw some dirt in it and a little asphalt and they would be gone.  After a few months, the hole was back and it was usually much bigger.

They would come back out with their trucks and shovels, throw some more dirt in the hole and lay a little more asphalt.  And once again, they were gone.

My wise mentor would watch each time the crew was out.  He would walk over to them as they worked and strike up a conversation about that pothole and offer his advice on the situation.

The road crew was there so often, they got to know my friend well.  And they would cringe as he walked up because they knew he was about to share his opinion with them if they wanted it or not.

He would ask them why they were there, even though it was obvious, and they would answer.  He would remind them it had only been a few months since they were there doing the same exact thing.  The supervisor would shrug and agree as the old gentlemen continued on.

“Now, don’t you think if you fixed it right, you could save yourself a lot of time and grief”, he said.

“Yeah, but the city wants us to save money so we can only do a patch”, the supervisor replied.

“Well seems to me, you have been here 4 times this year alone.  And you know you will have to be back here in a couple months again.  How can having 3 men waste their time doing the same thing over and over, be saving the city, and the taxpayers for that matter, any money?  Seems to be, It’s Always Easier and Cheaper in the Long Run to Just Do It Right In the First Place.”

I think about his words often.  As a dentist, when I see a patient suffering with a dental problem unnecessarily, it reminds me of the pothole.

Patients rely on me to give them my best treatment. They rely on me to fix it right the first time. And they want me to save them time, energy, as well as money in the long run.  That is my role as their dentist.

For patients who are missing teeth, that is why I recommend dental implants.  Not only do they replace the teeth, but they also stabilize the bite, provide a strong anchor of support for chewing, as well as give the patient back confidence and comfort that they won’t get with any other option.    Dental implants restore so much to a person’s quality of life; it is difficult to even put a figure on it.

Dental implants are the best option for tooth replacement.  It is a wonderful service that we enjoy providing for our VIPs (Very Important Patients!).  And just like my ‘adopted grandfather’, we always have room at our dental home for one more special person if you would like to join us here : http://implantdentistrybradfordontario.com

What Are Immediate Dental Implants?

February 25th, 2009

One of aspects of dental implants and the surgery that is required to get them that put many potential patients off is the time it takes for the implant to fully heal and be used like a regular tooth. If this is the case for you, then you should ask your dental implant what are immediate dental implants. Immediate dental implants are a dental implant and dental cap combined that I all implanted in your jaw the same day as the hole for the dental implant is drilled. Thus, the only waiting time is the time it takes for your jaw to heal around the implant; you do not have to wait for the jaw to heal around the implant, and then wait for the dental surgeon to attach the top cap portion of the implant before you can use it like a regular tooth. This means that the down time associated with immediate dental implants is much lower.

However, immediate dental implants have a much greater chance of failing simply because all the steps are combined and there is less chance for the dental implant to fully inspect each part separately to ensure that it was installed properly and that it is healing properly. Thus, when you go to your dental implant and ask him or her what are immediate dental implants, make sure to also ask him or her what are the dangers regarding immediate dental implants as well.

Reasons to Visit an Implant Dentist

February 24th, 2009

There are numerous reasons to visit an implant dentist, including wanting to replace missing teeth and / or need to have a very bad tooth pulled that you then want to get replaced with an implant. There are many different reasons to visit an implant dentist, just like there are many different reasons to want or need an implant. However, the main reasons behind an implant are the fact that a dental implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth that is out there right now.

This is because a dental implant is a titanium screw or rod that is implanted in your jaw where your tooth root uses to be. The implant then acts like an artificial tooth root for a dental cap that is attached to the top of titanium screw once the screw fuses with the bone of your jaw. Because dental cap is anchored in your jaw like a regular tooth, you can eat any of the regular foods that you love that would normally bother someone with a dental bridge or even dentures.

Moreover, because of the unique design of dental implants and the dental caps that attach to the tops of them, no one else will even be able to tell that you have anything but natural teeth in your mouth. And, you will even forget that your implant is not a regular tooth at times too.

Can Failed Dental Implants Be Replaced?

February 9th, 2009

Dental implants are basically titanium rods which are inserted in the jawbone and which act as anchors onto which artificial teeth made of porcelain or ceramic are fixed. On the whole dental implants are successful. However there is always a chance that the dental implant is not successful. When that happens, one has to wonder can failed dental implants be replaced.

A successful dental implant will allow you to use the artificial teeth just like your natural ones. However when the implant fails, it leads to very distinctive signs which tell you something is wrong. In the case of unsuccessful implants the implant might get loose and wriggle inside the bone. This causes a typical pain and discomfort during chewing and eating. There is also a continuous sensation of heat around the implant which signifies infection.

When you ask if failed dental implants can be replaced, it is important to know the cause of the failure. Generally the failed dental implants can be replaced but it might require more surgery and discomfort.

One reason for implant failure is infection. In this case, the failed dental implants can be replaced by changing the entire unit after cleaning out all the infection and treating it. Another reason for dental implants failing is incomplete healing and fusion of the rod and bone. Here the failed dental implants can be replaced by redoing the surgery and ensuring the healing has taken place. Sometimes the cause is inadequate bone density. In this case bone grafting is how failed dental implants can be replaced.

Treatment and Surgery of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

January 23rd, 2009

A tooth which does not erupt completely as required, is termed as impact teeth. This could be mainly because of insufficient space in the jaw or because of improper angulation of the tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth are a common factor; this problem persists among many people. It is normally painless and does not cause any problems. Wisdom teeth are the last of the teeth to emerge.

Problems that are associated with impacted teeth are tenderness, frequent swelling, partial opening of the mouth, constant pain, bad breath and unpleasant taste. A partially erupted tooth often causes infection as food accumulates below the gums and causes bacterial growth. This results in trismus, bad breath, swelling and pain.

If the case is serious jaw bone surgery may be recommended by the dentist or just pain relievers or mouthwashes could soothen the gums and do the trick. In most cases impacted tooth need to be surgical removed. Normally a person needs to take 5-7 days of leave when he is undergoing surgery and treatment for the impacted wisdom teeth.  This gives the patient sufficient time to recuperate from a swollen face. Treatment and surgery of the impacted wisdom tooth is either done by dental surgeon or an oral maxillofacial surgeon. An oral maxillofacial surgeon will probably work out more expensive than a dental surgeon. Proper medication and instructions given by the dentist must be strictly adhered to by the patient after the surgery.

What are The Medical and Dental Effects Associated With Missing Teeth

January 10th, 2009

The effect that well maintained teeth have on the body is something that every person knows to a great extent. The occurrence of a health complaint in the body is usually a signal that there is some major health complaint in the body. There are so many examples. A very simple health complaint such as a gum disease can be the indication of a cardio related problem. A gum disease can be the warning of an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The damage that is done to the gums at that time can never be undone.

Missing teeth can also have emotional effects such as decrease in the level of self confidence, dislike in one’s appearance, hiding the loss of teeth, wrinkles, avoidance of social events, poor self image and sadness or even depression. Missing teeth is often associated with old age and therefore if a person loses a tooth, it can make him look much older than he really is. Replacing missing teeth not only improves one’s smile, it enhances self esteem, self confidence and even the shape of the face. When a person misses a tooth, the other teeth tend to tilt and drift to cover that gap. This causes food to get trapped in those spaces. Losing teeth can lead to deterioration of the jawbone.
